Background

At Twilio, we're incredibly energized by the power of AI to transform the way we work, live, and interact with the world around us. While the AI boom is one of the most exciting and fast paced periods of technology yet, it has also led to uncertainty and skepticism around data privacy and security. A lot of this uncertainty comes from AI seeming like a “black box”, with limited governance and transparency into how products are built and how they leverage AI.

The AI Nutrition Facts label was a project led by our team to provide more transparency into how we build AI into our products.

These labels are intended to give consumers and businesses a more transparent and clear view into ‘what's in the box’ — how their data is being used — especially when it comes to training LLMs. They also empower customers to make informed decisions about which AI-powered capabilities they are prepared to adopt.

Leaders across technology, academia, and government are all trying to figure out how we can bring more trust and transparency to the AI space. Google launched Model Cards(link takes you to an external page) for experts and non-experts alike, IBM has its FactSheet project(link takes you to an external page), and the Data Nutrition Project(link takes you to an external page) takes a similar approach to help empower data scientists and policymakers. We believe that more trust in AI benefits everyone, and look forward to continuing work in this area.
